The Violence of Revelation in Early Christianity
For the first several centuries after revelation was written, it was much debated. Revelation celebrates what's going to happen when God destroys everything opposed to him and then gives followers of Jesus this city of gold with gates of pearl. Church fathers thought that was really offensive because Christians were start Christian leaders are starting to emphasize the need for ascetic living. That view ended up winning out that became the standard view.
