The idea of an original sin of blackness lost its mesmeric powers over me long ago. I became attracted to pan-Africanist ideals that told a very different story about my charcoal black body and low-hanging lips. You would think with Obama, the universal declaration of human rights, desegregation and the institutionalization of apartheid, we would be in a happy place. This is not the way the world works. Instead, right now, it often feels like things are getting a lot worse.
