The Gamer's Dicotomy

Games like gone home and depression cuass, games about mundane matters, walking simulators. Should they be considered games? Would a hardcor gamer care about them? That is to say, mechanics, systems, numbers, spread sheets? And part of why i think this decotomy is so hard to talk about, at least for me, is because there are so many different kinds of games that blend story and game. Like in outer wilds, for example, how could you possibly separate the story from game play? I would argue they're pretty much the same. They're very much in sink.
