Gerrymandering is how you rig a political district so that your side has got the advantage in the next election and many subsequent. It all started in 1812 with this politician named Eldridge Gary, who was governor of Massachusetts. A political cartoonist saw this and put Gary's name and salamander together came up with the gerrymander.
