CHAPTER

The Pragmatic Turn in AI

In 50 years, we're going to look at our current understanding of the human mind and how it works. And it's going to just look as cartoonish as it looks to us to the ancient Greeks. A large part of what it is to be a human being is not information, but the absence of information. When we have AI that in effect meditates and prunes itself and cries over the death of a loved one then makes decisions that are slightly in ever so subtle ways different, then we might have an AI that can do absolutely everything. I put that forward because it just seems so preposterous. We're embodied. They're not embodied. We don't understand emotion.
