Native Americans and the Tricksters
In the Native Americans, the trickster is almost as important as a ruling God from the coyote to the rabbit. He was taken by the colonists to be their devil, but that's really wrong. Within about 100 years, Cheepy becomes a story that's told to scare children by usually indigenous nannies who are brought into white families. And eventually what happens is Cheepy, of course, we have the plagues that swept through America and killed so many.
