If the mother has a medical condition called polycystic ovary syndrome, where she is producing high levels of testosterone, such women have an elevated likelihood of their child being autistic. Other groups have found that women who have gestational diabetes are more likely to have autistic children. And they think this may be because if you gain weight too quickly during pregnancy, that not only changes your insulin levels, but also sex steroid hormones like testosterone and estrogen.
