The Austrian army was technically at the ready, but they were still woefully unprepared for a midnight raid. When the battle cry went out, some of the troops apparently began to flee immediately back east into the night. And with that, the Battle of Kerensebass had begun. The casualties were 10% of Joseph's fighting force. That is 10,000 men dead injured or AWOL.
