The Hair Shirt Doctrine
The Buddha, who was a contemporary of Grosala, called his doctrine the hair shirt doctrine. A more sophisticated psychological approach is out of the great Sankya philosophy. One's true being is that timeless moon self that never was in the world and never will have to escape from it. And with that one simply lets the body drop off.
