The Green Knight: History, Myth, and Modern Shame -- A Historian's View
Historiansplaining: A historian tells you why everything you know is wrong
The Green Knight
In this interpretation, gawayne's decision to face the green knight is indeed a kind of self destruction. It's a decision to leave behind the life and the person that he has been back in camelot. The contrast between the horrors of the war and the comfort and pleasure of the home sort of drive home how needless and meaninglessly wasteful the war is. This technique of showing his alternate possible life that he could have lived, which he now rejects was also reminiscent of other movies.
