You can simply invest in index funds. You don't have to worry whether your relationship manager gave you the right fund or the wrong fund. The stock is only to give you that extra bit of, you know, kind of a thrill besides trying to create alpha if you are good at it. In some categories, active mutual funds do outperform indices.
