Introduction

Between Western psychology and the so-called religions of Asia, there is common ground because both are interested in changing states of human consciousness. Only those states of consciousness which are not normal are usually treated in Western psychology as being in some way sick. Changing consciousness is often looked upon as a form of therapy. But in general, different states of consciousness from the normal are regarded as a forms of sickness.
