We should have had more what you describe as remorse, repentance and even restitution. Instead it turned into a time of kind of self aggrandizement,. So why didn't we engage in that more self reflective postured? And really, it wasn't realistic. Was it really possible for us to do that? Well, i don't know. It would seem unlikely. I remember the closing scene in the movie patent in isgorge scott doing a voisover recounting the practice in ancient rome when the roman legions had ventured forth. That at least testifies to the possibility of reflection at a moment of triumph. It didn't happen.
