James's Dispensing Power

In 1687 James issued an indulgence declaration so he invoked his so-called dispensing power which is sort of like pardoning power the power to grant exceptions to laws. This led to a backlash and opposition from mainstream Anglicans who were in the majority in parliament. The House of Commons strenuously objected and argued that the king did not have this authority to totally override laws enacted by parliament. So what did James do in July he finally dissolved parliament permanently right and forbade them from meeting any further. In pretty short time Magdalene College at Oxford was secured as a Catholic beachhead with a Catholic faculty and curriculum in Oxford.
