In order to gain a leat status with airlines, you basely just have to spend a lot of money. If i want to sit in that same seat, all i need to do is redeem more miles. Business class or first class generally costs three to four times as many miles. You can choose how to use them economy, cost less miles. But if i want to sat next to you after you've spent tens of thousands of dollars being loyal to an airline, i just redeem three times as many points.
