In 15 17, an expedition led by one francisco hernandez de cordoba explored the coast of mexico for the first time. They were attacked and 50 spaniards were killed, with the expedition leader later dying of his wounds. When juan de grialvo failed to return from his voyage, rumors and worries began to spread.
