The Instruction Set Architecture Is the Place Where Hardware and Software Meet
The instruction set architecture is the place where hardware and software meet. It defines of course the instructions that the microprocessor is going to need to understand. A register can be thought about as a very very very tiny bit of memory that sits right on the microprocessor so it's extremely fast to access. The instruction set architecture will also define how memory is accessed.
