Dido was born in 17 61 in london. Her mother, maria bell, was an african woman who possibly lived in jamaica and later florida. She moved there having been mistress to dido's married father sir john lindsey,. Lindsey actually had five children of color, all from different mothers. He acknowledged his paternity over of dido by providing gen rously for her in his will. Dido spent much of her life in kenwood house in hampstead, and also in a london house owned by her great uncle, lord mansfield - he was a famous judge.
