The Difficult Case of Laugh Labs
There was a study done by Richard Wiseman, I don't know if you're familiar with him. They did a study called Laugh Lab where they asked people to contribute jokes in English. The one that received the most votes wasn't really puns or homophone and it didn't have any specific cultural references. That seemed to be the one that everyone was able to get - which is an example of how difficult some jokes are for non-second language learners to understand.
