Foucault says that the shift from looking at documents to now looking at monuments has had two effects. One is a shift to long durations of unity and all those narratives we mentioned already. The other was rupture and disruption. And what he means by that is to treat them as just a statement in themselves rather than implying anything further or behind them. I don't take Foucault at face value on this part.
