Louis Pasta was the first person to realize that infectious diseases weren't caused by imbalances of humors or black magic. But he didn't really understand the role that these animals, these microbes played in the world. And even so, we're still discovering a lot about how these microbes impact our world and impact us. There's something like 40 trillion bacteria in our bodies - slightly more than our human cells.
