The Problems With Mental Discipline
The idea behind mental discipline theory was that the mind is a kind of muscle, and just like you need to exercise your muscles. And it was argued that latin and greek, because their hard languages, i guess, do that along with mathematics, and therefore they should remain the centre piece of the american college curriculum. The people making that argument had no proof that that was true. They actually outsource to their opponents the role of being judges of the quality of education itself.
