Hoaid's plan is to get it through fulfilling his part of the bargain, basically. The second time is what we see as the finale of this book. And he becomes an elantrian, which was his original goal. I do also think that probably part of this is that he didn't anticipate the curse being the reduction of his mental capacity. He goes in with his full abilities and maybe leaves without them all.
