What Happens When a White Dwarf Meets Red?

White dwarfs have a different physical effect than stars like the sun. Most stars in the universe don't live by themselves, they live in what are called binery systems. A white dwarf can steal material from its companion star to grow in mass. But it never quite reaches the chandrasaka mass because as the white dwarf's mass grows larger and larger, the white dwarf is made of carbon. The temperature and pressure in the centre of that white dwarf star can become so extreme that carbon detonation can occur - an extremely violent cosmic event.
