All the statues are placed upon stone platforms called ahu. There's an excavated quarry where these were dug out. The theory is that they're depictions of ancestors, so that these people practised a form of ancestor worship. One of the ones that was there, that was not finished, was a wopping 21 meters tall, or 69 feet.
