CHAPTER

Metabolism and the Activity of Mitochondria

Van der Heagen: Metabolism, mitochondria, maybe at the root of this species intrinsic developmental timing. To test it, they developed a novel system where they could label newly born neurons with very high temporal cellular resolution. And then extended that by using pharmacology or genetics to manipulate neurons to either enhance or decrease mitochondrial function. If they inhibited mitochondria metabolism in the mouse neurons, they got a decrease in the developmental rates.
