I think the capacities for suffering vary with the nature of the species. We see it more closely in those non-human animals who either seem to be like us, because they're closely related to us. So there we recognize it quite well. But if you move to a species very different from us, although the behavior of the octopus shows intelligence and ability to solve problems, it's not easy for us to know what an octopus is really feeling.
