The Tribune of the Plebeians

The Tribune was a novel political office because all of the legal offices were also religious in nature, and they were considered almost like a type of priesthood. The Tribune was created under the terms of a sort of conclusion of hostilities between the plebeians and the patricians. They had this wholly unusual and peculiar power in that no one was permitted to do anything against them. And so the Tribune was a figure that inspired fear to the nobles, but were considered to be like heroes to the common people.
