Leonard has been described as the archetypal renaissance man. He was born out of wedlock to a peasant woman and a wealthy notary father, with no surname in the modern sense. His illegitimate status meant he was barred from following his father into his trade or joining one of the many professional guilds. Luckily, leonardo's father had an important contact in nearby florence, and arranged for him to be apprenticed to the prominent painter and sculptor,. whose studio produced work for the ruling medici family martin.
