The Ponzi scheme collapsed in about eight months. Bernie Madoff was regulated not only by FINRA, but by the SEC. Of course, I'm regulated by both and I can tell you from firsthand experience that none of these government regulators are protecting the public. And there really would be some self-regulatory bodies that existed in a free market.
