Klaus Reimer was sent to a camp by his parents during the Second World War. Gunther from Essen travelled more than 600 kilometres to a camp in Czechoslovakia. By 1943, over 150,000 children had been evacuated from Berlin and Hamburg. Klaus joined the Volksstrüm, a militia made up of men who were too young or too old to serve in regular German army.
