The Story of the Premiere of the Symphony
Shostakovich and Yevtushenko defied censors, abuse to premiere the symphony in 1961. The piece was barely performed after the premiere; a score needed to be smuggled into the west for it to be performed there. In an age today, many people don't speak out about anti-Semitism because they are afraid of backlash on social media. I hope we can all learn from the example of Shostakovich," says Yehudi Menuhin.
