If you get control of the one master system it becomes incredibly hard to circumvent and that poses a risk of the concentration of political power. Now states can operate surveillance meshes that include your thermostat and the voting machine you used, your car and everything else. The laws that protect this stuff notably the digital onion copyright act of 1998 are so broadly written that they hold out criminal penalties of five-year prison sentences for publishing defects in systems that protect copyrights.
