Just 17% of Americans belong to churches, just 17%. And I think that's because the churches were still wedded to this standing order moment. Tocqueville sees a remarkable order and one that is all organized in these voluntary societies. The seminary emerges as the kind of hub of that whole network of voluntary associations.
