China's Very First States
Before metal working became a key defining feature of these societies, populations exploded in number. Some settlements grew far larger than others with walls and monumental buildings. The end result was the growth of china's earliest states. But those states did not last as thoroughly as any states we've seen over the course of our show. They were only replaced later, centuries later, by new processes of state formation.
