How to Communicate Civilly With Others
Being kind is the first step. The second step, as you suggest, is listening. And I go a step further. What I find very useful is to attempt to restate the person's argument for them and to check with them. Is this what you meant? Is this what they said? They just launch on you as if you're not even a human being. But people do, in fact, have the manners of goats. There's no sugar coating this. We've got to figure out a way to approximate the threat of a punch in the mouth. That was an unfortunate day when there are no repercussions for terrible behavior.
