i was at the new york yacht club library in new York city, researching a companion book to the patrick o'brien novels. I saw on the spine of a book the words sufferings africa and i thought, well, that looks interesting. Pulled it down a open and started to read. And it was captain riley's memoir from 18 15. He did tell some stories that i thought, ok, maybe he's ge ot stretching the truth here a little bit. But turns out he wasn't. Well, the book, i think, lives up to its name, sufferings in africa.
