The Barham Sinking Trial
The trial began on March 23rd, 1944 in court four of the central criminal court aka the old Bailey. The defense was led by barrister C.E. Lowsby who was a spiritualist and whose services were arranged by the spiritualists National Union. Nearly 50 witnesses to attest to Duncan's seances being the real thing. All four defendants pleaded not guilty.
Helen Duncan is sometimes described as Scotland’s last witch, or the last person imprisoned for witchcraft in Britain, or the last person to be tried under the UK’s 1735 Witchcraft Act. None of those are quite accurate.
