There's a growing body of work pointing to relative poverty and failed expectations, rather than absolute poverty as what leads to this sort of radicalization. People who are extremely poor are so preoccupied with their own survival they don't have time to think about engaging in politically modivated action. So typically, economic circumstances are part of a more complex narrative that involves political arguments as well.
