Is China Taking a Different Tack in Diplomacy?

Until russia's invasion of ukraine, my sense is that chinese leaders probably saw little down sides to their growing strategic relationship with russia. I think baging was indeed taken aback by the the scale of putins war and the global outrage it provoked. But nevertheless, we haven't really seen any signs of an about face by b jing. And i has decided this because it probably thinks that even if it were to condemn russia at this point, it wouldn't necessarily improve things too much.
