Back then there were two positions. There was an ALT assistant language teacher and a CIR, which is coordinator of international relations. You can give a preference, but you're not anyway guaranteed to get. I think I did like Hokkaido, like Sapporo Tokyo in Kyoto and I got Miyazaki. And that was my first taste of rural Japan.
