Dr. Kedada Williams: Most white Americans believe that release from bondage and maybe pay for their labor is all black people should get at the end of slavery. So there's a lot of resistance to emancipation because they're concerned about what might follow, including black people pressing for racial equality. The abolitionist movement is a multiracial movement, but when we look at the white folks in there, the vast majority of them can thread the needle very easily," she says.
