The Mixed Legacy of Machiavele
I'm not sure to what extent Machiavele would have predicted a mathematical physics in the sense of a kind of natural science. But even there, it seems more like responding to chance than it does inventing technology of the sort that we have today. And I wonder to what extent that technology and the social place of modern science has exacerbated these two Machiavellian passions - acquisitiveness and fear. Maybe he'll let down with us later thinkers, maybe with himself for not doing X, Y or C. There's a serious lack of virtue that he was trying to get towards.
