Jady vance represented a vision of small town america that had been degraded and betrayed by the forces of finance, industrial and economic change. My grandparents were born in poverty in eastern kentucky coal country. And you think about these areas that have really suffered economically, that have staggnant upward mobility, it's a certain pessimism about what their own children and grandchildren will expect. i think that's where the real bitterness comes from.
