The working class in the U.S. has always been very large and diverse, depending on what sector or industry you're in. In the 60s and early 70s that there were a lot of old school blue collar workers who were put off by the anti-war movement. Richard Nixon cultivated this idea as part of his blue-collar strategy to take advantage of fractures within the New Deal Democratic Coalition because of Vietnam.
