The History of Tobacco

André Thévey was a Franciscan priest who observed the fearsome Tupinambas people smoking tobacco during tribal dances near Rio de Janeiro, which was then a French colony. A few years later, in 1560, the French diplomat Jean-Nicole brought tobacco to France and widely oversold its virtues as a panacea. The business community's successful efforts to hide the harmful effects of tobacco for so long is one of the ugliest and most lethal episodes in the history of capitalism.
