The Importance of Early Drafts
I'm a kind of old fashioned in the sense that I tell most of my students not to send work out while they're in the workshop because one of the things that's hardest for people to learn is how to really revise their work. If you're constantly hoping that the draft you're working on will be the last one, it's very difficult to really explore the work. It's hard to discover anything that way. So I try to dampen expectations, I can't prohibit them from sending work out, but I discourage it. But obviously there's, you know, you reach the point when you want the work to be out in the world.
