The Depopulation of the Roman Empire

The military might of Rome was previously sort of premised on the assumption that those who had a stake in the prosperity of the country should defend it. But as always happened, the greed of the nobility began to get out of hand. Most who fought for Rome were from other Italian states that had been subjugated within the past couple generations. The elites effectively hollowed out the foundations of the society they governed and this had the effect of sabotaging their own defenses.
