Swift had somebody copy the manuscript so it's handwriting couldn't be traced back to him. His publisher at the time, this guy named Benjamin Mott made some cuts and additions to reduce the chance that he would be prosecuted for publishing it. A bunch of also anonymous people wrote a bunch of like follow ups and sequels that really survived to the present day.
