Ruthie knew that she could die but I resolved it in my mind this way like a firefighter standing in front of a burning building. She thought she had to live for those girls and she was not going to let anything that compromised her ability to resist getting her way. The will to live is exactly what they want people to do when they're faced with terminal illness because the will to live has been and can't have an enormous effect.
